Dear members of our university community,
As the year draws to a close, we wish you the warmest season’s greetings. We hope you find time to rest, unwind, recharge and enjoy the company of family and friends. Time is a precious gift. Let’s share it generously in the coming weeks with others, our loved ones and those who may be lonely or struggling.
Looking back on this year, we see a community that has accomplished so much, even in challenging circumstances. Alongside dedication and expertise, this takes attention, resilience and solidarity – qualities many of you have shown in abundance. Let’s take the time to thank each other. And on behalf of the Executive Board: thank you for all your efforts, including the work that often goes unseen and the small gestures that make a big difference.
This gratitude is not only from the Executive Board but from me personally. Since I arrived at Leiden University, I’ve seen nothing but friendly faces. Such a warm welcome has a huge effect. Each year, we welcome many new students and staff. My hope is that they too feel seen and at home from the start.
A close-knit community isn’t created overnight – it’s something we build every day, through small gestures, a welcoming word and the willingness to embrace those who are new. Our four Leiden values guide us here.
Connection reminds us to seek out others. Our strength lies in our diverse voices, backgrounds and ideas. Differences bring us together if we continue to approach them with curiosity.
Innovation means daring to change, even when it feels daunting. Innovating isn’t breaking with the past – it’s about moving toward the future and continuing to learn and to reimagine our university.
Freedom gives us space to explore, doubt, talk and grow. It means being open: listening to different opinions, asking questions and allowing others to experiment and even to fail.
Responsibility calls for care and attention to our work and to others. It reaches beyond our university. In a time of global conflict, persecution and displacement, let us show solidarity with those who are struggling, who have had to flee their homeland or who are living under repression or war.
This December, let’s take a moment to think of those who do not have the good fortune of a warm home or a place of light and security. Let’s share our thoughts and warmth with those going through difficult times, whether close to home or far away.
To our international community: you bring a wealth of perspectives, experiences and cultures, and we deeply value these. Whether you’re travelling home to your family or are spending the holiday here in Leiden or The Hague, I hope you find warm moments and experience these weeks as a time of connection and meaning.
Let this be a time to pause but not to lose momentum. We need to rest, but let’s not let things wash over us. We need hope. Hope isn’t leaning back and waiting for things to improve. It’s an action that begins by believing that the future can or should be different. Isn’t that at the heart of our mission as a university: to raise questions, pursue goals and dare to drive change, even when that means going against the grain?
That hope, grounded in our values and each other, gives us the confidence to face the future. We wish you happy holidays and a new year filled with light, inspiration and connection.
Warmest greetings, on behalf of the Executive Board, Luc Sels
President
